Sept. 17, 2016

One in eight United States. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the United States.  A woman in the Washington, D.C. area is 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than the average American woman.

It doesn’t end there…

One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner every year. In Maryland, between July 2012 and June 2013, fifty people lost their lives because of domestic violence. There were a total of 16,817 domestic violence crimes reported in Maryland in 2013. On one day in 2014, Maryland domestic violence programs served 1,085 victims/survivors; another 160 were turned away due to lack of resources.
